Quick answer

It depends on the wax. Plant-based waxes such as soy, coconut, rapeseed and palm are not animal products. Beeswax is made by bees and is not vegan. Paraffin is petroleum-derived rather than animal-derived, although some vegans weigh other concerns. Even with a vegan wax, other ingredients in the candle can be animal-derived, so the wax type alone does not settle it.

Vegan status by wax type

Wax Source Generally vegan?
Soy Hydrogenated soybean oil Yes, but check additives
Coconut (often blended) Coconut oil Yes, but check blend and additives
Rapeseed Rapeseed oil Yes, but check additives
Palm Palm oil Plant-based, but sourcing is a concern for many (see palm wax)
Paraffin Petroleum Not animal-derived; views differ
Beeswax Bees No
Gel Mineral oil and polymer Not animal-derived; check ingredients

Blends complicate things. A “soy blend” or “coconut blend” might include paraffin or beeswax, and proprietary blends do not always list every component. Soy-specific details are in our guide to types of soy wax.

Ingredients to check besides the wax

  • Stearic acid and similar additives: these can be sourced from plant or animal fats. If a label does not say, ask the maker.
  • Dyes: most candle dyes are synthetic, but it is reasonable to confirm. Our guide to the ingredients in colored candles explains the dye types.
  • Fragrance: fragrance oils are usually synthetic or plant-derived, but a few natural ingredients can come from animals. Ask if it matters to you.
  • Wick and glue: wicks are typically cotton or paper-based and held by metal tabs. Adhesives are rarely a concern, though some products use them.
  • Testing: some vegans also look for cruelty-free statements on the brand rather than the ingredients.

Is paraffin vegan?

Paraffin wax comes from petroleum, not from animals, so by an ingredient-only definition it generally qualifies. Some people avoid it anyway for environmental or ethical reasons, and some paraffin candles contain additives that are not vegan. For the environmental angle, see is paraffin wax eco-friendly.

What gives candles their scent?

Scent usually comes from fragrance oils or essential oils blended into the melted wax. Our guide on how to use fragrance oils explains the options. Some waxes, such as beeswax, have their own faint aroma. Different waxes hold and release fragrance differently, which is part of why people compare them, as in soy vs paraffin candle wax.

Vegan versus eco-friendly versus non-toxic

These are three different claims:

  • Vegan means no animal-derived ingredients.
  • Eco-friendly concerns environmental impact. A plant-based wax is not automatically low-impact.
  • Non-toxic is a loose marketing term. No candle is guaranteed free from all effects, and ventilation, wick trimming and fragrance all matter. Be cautious about “100% non-toxic” claims without detail.

How to check a candle label

  1. Find the wax type and any blend percentages.
  2. Look for a vegan certification or an explicit statement.
  3. Ask about stearic acid, dye and fragrance if they are not listed.
  4. For handmade or small-batch candles, ask the maker directly.

FAQ

Is soy wax vegan? Soy wax itself is plant-based. The finished candle may still contain non-vegan additives, so check.

Is beeswax vegan? No. It is produced by bees.

Are hotel lobby candles non-toxic? There is no reliable general answer. It depends on the specific candle and ingredients, and you can only judge that from the product details.
